Whats Love Got To Do With It

Alexandria Joy - Wednesday, February 12, 2014

When it comes to the four lettered 'L' word most people believe it doesn't have a place in the workplace. However recently my team and I had the opportunity and privilege to work with an amazing team at a local aged care facility and we were blown away by their l.o.v.e. Love for their clients, their staff, their suppliers and community.

In a world dominated by endless automated phone prompts and sadly soul-less customer care, when a company gets it right, like these guys have, it gets us excited!

What we discovered was that it is possible not only to talk about love but act from a place of loving kindness in all you do at work.

Tweet This: "For long term business success, start with your culture." @UQPower #StartWithU

Now, I’d love to hear from you. In the comments section below tell me which one of these strategies:

  1. choose love not fear
  2. be a servant leader
  3. live your values

have you seen in action before and why it worked?

What else could you do to incorporate these principles in your business?

I have so many examples of "Choose Love, not fear." My favorite is Immaculee Ilibagiza in Rwanda whose shining example of finding a way to love the Hutu slayers of her family ended up working miracles for herself and many others.

Here's a business example. During the Cold War, Boeing sponsored an exhibition of 500 years of art from the Soviet Union, showing LOVE for that culture. They were rewarded with MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars of sales of airplanes to the Soviet Union. Most potential sponsors we approached to fund that show were afraid to touch anything related to the Soviets. Boeing chose the path of love, and it enormously impacted their bottom line.

Love is the Truth. Fear is only an illusion. Spirit only communicates through Love. Fear is a story you tell yourself.

Live Love!

LOVE,

Katherine

Powerful examples Katherine - thanks so much for sharing them. What amazing forgiveness, compassion and humanity show by Immaculee Ilibagiza in Rwanda and the company example of Boeing really shows how choosing the path of love can have a long term sustainable impact on a company's success.
Love is the Truth indeed.

Beautiful story Heidi! I think as an admirer of Robert Greenleaf also, I really like the servant leadership concept. If the leader can't serve who can.

A powerful example of how love can be incorporated into how you "work." I love that they care about their employee retention and making it a place they love to work while giving 100% to the people they serve!

I love, love, love, LOVE this video and message Heidi. I do not believe that you can serve your clients or anyone without love. The first thing that I teach my clients about sales is that you have to come from a place of service. All of these things are extremely aligned with my core values, both professionally and as a Christian. It's great to see other companies incorporating all of this into their businesses!

Great video and good points. When we operate from a place of love we feel so much better overall and that has a ripple effect on our world environment.

These examples that you shared are really touching. Thank you.

One might say their goal each and every day is to add value to others. In this group, some might say and feel they are 'loving' on each and every person. Right On! Fully with you.

Great video Heidi, as a full time professional seniors entertainer in nursing homes in and around Newcastle, I see love in the workplace a LOT and Maroba is one of my absolute favourite places to sing at, they are indeed caring.

You can see this in the residents, the staff, the children of residents and also there's a calm in the place that is really quite spiritual and Godly.

I think there IS room for love in every workplace, and any disruption of this love should be dealt with as a matter of priority, over anything else.

As a survivor of Leukaemia myself, and having only 3 weeks to live, LOVE is all we have when we think it's all over... Not business, making money, or market share... Only LOVE!

I love your philosophy on life and business Heidi and Viv Allanson is also an amazing lady with a large vision for our senior citizens, I have a healthy amount of respect for her and everyone at Maroba!

Hi Adam thanks for the wrap - great to hear that a talented guy like you is providing entertainment for the wonderful seniors I Newcastle - lucky them!
So great to hear your first hand experience with Maroba as well. Yes indeed there IS room for love in every workplace, and we agree that any disruption of this love should be dealt with as a matter of priority, over anything else.
You obviously are living proof of the power of love and we salute that!

I agree! LOVE has a place in the workforce. Your brand is your reputation and the way your business is perceived in the market ... and one person can tarnish that perception with a poor attitude or poor customer care.

I loved this clip. I worked with Maroba on developing their brand image and marketing communications and enjoyed every minute. This is a team who truly walk the talk. They celebrate 60 years this year and there is no wonder as to why they are so successful.

Thanks to everyone who has watched the "What's Love got to do with It" video produced by Heidi Alexandra. I have been with Maroba 20 years in June, so for 1/3 of the Maroba story I have had the privilege to build on a culture that started with a solid foundation. As a Faith based organisation it started with a well known bible verse from the Gospel of Mark 12:30-31 " Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength, this is the first commandment. And the second is like it " You shall love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these". When you are handed a mandate like that you have to make a choice in how you intend to lead, and be consistent every single day. It has been a wonderful journey and my love for Maroba's people just keeps growing even when I am stretched and challenged. The team around me over the 20 years have made it possible for me to lead in this way...they get it and like me are learning new lessons everyday. But we keep each other accountable to Live the Love life and when we slip we extend arms that embrace and words that encourage to ensure our family remains intact and on track.
I hope that you will choose to live and lead the Love way and like me never feel that you are working for a living, just love what you do !
